Tumble dryer lifespan: how long does it last?

Short answer

Tumble dryer: 8 to 12 years on average, so around 10 years in normal household use. Regular maintenance routinely pushes past the top of that range.

A tumble dryer lasts 8 to 12 years on average. Newer heat-pump models generally last as long as condenser ones while using considerably less energy.

Lint is the dryer's number one enemy. A clogged filter makes the machine run hot, lengthens cycles, pushes up your electricity bill and prematurely wears out the heating element or the compressor.

Signs it is reaching the end

  • Laundry takes far longer to dry than it used to
  • The machine runs abnormally hot or smells of burning
  • The condensate tank barely fills while the laundry stays damp
  • Rubbing noises appear (belt or tensioner pulley)
  • The drum no longer turns even though the machine powers on (broken belt)

The maintenance that extends its life

  • Empty the lint filter

    How often: after every cycle

  • Rinse the condenser (or its filter) in lukewarm water

    How often: monthly

  • Empty the condensate tank

    How often: after every cycle

  • Dust the rear grille and the back of the machine

    How often: every 6 months

Repair or replace?

A belt or heating element is cheap to replace and worth doing on a machine under 8 years old. On a heat-pump model, however, a compressor failure often costs more than half the price of a new dryer: at that point, replacing makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a tumble dryer last?

Eight to twelve years on average. Emptying the lint filter after every single cycle is the habit that affects this most: a clogged filter makes the machine overheat and wears out the element or compressor.

Why is my tumble dryer no longer drying properly?

In the vast majority of cases the lint filter or the condenser is clogged and air can no longer circulate. Clean both before assuming a fault. If the problem persists, the temperature sensor or the heating element may be to blame.
