Steam generator iron lifespan: how long does it last?
Steam generator iron: 5 to 10 years on average, so around 7 years in normal household use. Regular maintenance routinely pushes past the top of that range.
A steam generator, like a steam iron, lasts 5 to 10 years. One factor separates the two extremes: limescale. In a hard-water area with no descaling, a generator gives up after four or five years; rinsed every quarter, it doubles its life.
Limescale does not kill the machine suddenly: it gradually cuts the steam output, stains laundry with yellow marks, then blocks the boiler. The signs show up long before the failure, which leaves plenty of time to act.
Thinking of buying one?
- Expect 5 to 10 years of use for a well-maintained model.
- 4 maintenance tasks decide how long it lasts.
Just bought one? Record its warranty in Delvyia: you will be warned before it runs out, and the receipt stays within reach.
Record my applianceSigns it is reaching the end
- Steam output weakens, or no steam comes out at all
- Yellow or brown marks appear on the laundry
- Flakes of limescale are spat out by the soleplate
- The soleplate drags on fabric instead of gliding
- The boiler takes much longer to be ready
The maintenance that extends its life
Empty the water tank after use to avoid deposits and smells
How often: after every session
Clean the soleplate with a suitable product, machine cold
How often: every month
Rinse the scale collector or the boiler as the manual describes (full descaling)
How often: every 3 months
Replace the anti-scale cartridge if your model has one, or as soon as the indicator says so
How often: every 3 to 6 months
Repair or replace?
A scaled-up generator is not a dead generator: before any quote, run a full descaling as the manual describes, which solves most steam problems. If the boiler is pierced or the pump has failed, repair often exceeds half the price of a new entry-level machine. On a premium generator, however, parts are available and repair still makes sense.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a steam generator be descaled?
Every three months is a good baseline, more often if your water is hard or you iron a lot. Some machines block steam production on their own when descaling is overdue.
Should I use demineralised water?
Follow the manual first: many manufacturers advise against pure demineralised water, which can cause spitting, and recommend mixing it with tap water. What to avoid in every case is rainwater, water softened by a salt-based softener, and scented water.
