Pellet stove lifespan: how long does it last?

Short answer

Pellet stove: 10 to 20 years on average, so around 15 years in normal household use. Regular maintenance routinely pushes past the top of that range.

A pellet stove lasts 10 to 20 years. The first parts to wear are the flue extraction fan, the ignition element and the auger, all replaceable: it is fouling, far more than age, that sends a stove to the scrapyard.

Note that in France this is one of the few appliances whose maintenance is a legal obligation. Since 1 October 2023, decree 2023-641 requires maintenance at least once every twelve months whenever the appliance is used. Beyond the fine, the real stake is insurance: without a certificate, your insurer may refuse to pay out after a fire.

Signs it is reaching the end

  • The glass dirties far faster than it used to, with a black greasy deposit
  • The flame turns orange and lazy instead of lively
  • The stove fails to ignite or faults at the start of a cycle
  • The extraction fan becomes noisy or whistles
  • A smell of smoke spreads into the room while running

The maintenance that extends its life

  • Empty and scrape the burn pot so that every air hole is clear

How often: weekly during the heating season

  • Vacuum the ash pan and the combustion chamber with an ash vacuum

How often: every 2 weeks during the heating season

  • Clean the heat exchanger using the scraper rods

How often: monthly during the heating season

  • Check the condition of the door and glass gaskets

    How often: once a year

  • Have annual servicing and chimney sweeping done by a professional, and keep the certificate

How often: once a year (legal requirement in France)

Repair or replace?

Repair is almost always the right decision. An extraction fan, an ignition element, an auger motor or a sensor each cost between 50 and 200 € fitted, against several thousand euros for a new installed stove. Replacement mainly makes sense when the combustion chamber is cracked, or to qualify for an energy renovation grant. Either way, keep the sweeping certificate: it is what protects your insurance cover.

Frequently asked questions

Is servicing a pellet stove compulsory?

In France, yes. Since 1 October 2023, decree 2023-641 of 20 July 2023 requires servicing at least once every twelve months whenever the appliance is used. Chimney sweeping is compulsory too, once or twice a year depending on your local council rules.

Why does the glass blacken so quickly?

In order: a fouled burn pot whose air holes are blocked, poor-quality or damp pellets, or an air setting that is too low. Start by scraping the burn pot, which is the most frequent cause and the simplest to fix.
