Water softener lifespan: how long does it last?
Water softener: 10 to 15 years on average, so around 12 years in normal household use. Regular maintenance routinely pushes past the top of that range.
A water softener lasts 10 to 15 years, while the ion-exchange resin itself holds up for 8 to 10 years before losing its effectiveness. It is a discreet appliance, installed once and then forgotten, even though it protects every other one: water heater, washing machine, dishwasher and taps.
Its maintenance comes down to three things: salt in the tank, an annual disinfection of the resin, and a pre-filter changed twice a year. A softener left without salt for months protects nothing at all, while still showing every sign of working normally.
Thinking of buying one?
- Expect 10 to 15 years of use for a well-maintained model.
- 5 maintenance tasks decide how long it lasts.

Record my applianceSigns it is reaching the end
- Limescale reappears on taps and in the kettle
- Salt consumption becomes unusually high or, conversely, stops
- An unpleasant taste or smell appears in the tap water
- A hardened block of salt has formed in the tank (salt bridge)
- Water pressure drops throughout the house (clogged pre-filter)
The maintenance that extends its life
Check the salt level and top up the tank
How often: every month
Test the hardness of the softened water with a test strip
How often: every 3 months
Replace the cartridge of the pre-filter fitted upstream
How often: every 6 months
Disinfect the resin with a suitable product, then run a full regeneration
How often: at least once a year
Empty and clean the salt tank to remove deposits and salt bridges
How often: every 3 to 4 years
Repair or replace?
A valve, a control board or a salt tank can be replaced without difficulty and buys several more years. An exhausted resin after a decade, however, is the real turning point: replacing it often costs enough that it is worth comparing with a new appliance, which will use less salt and less regeneration water. Have the outlet hardness tested before deciding: a softener that no longer gets below 15 °f despite salt and a correct regeneration has a resin at the end of its life.
Frequently asked questions
How often should a water softener be disinfected?
At least once a year, and systematically after a long period without use. The resin stays permanently damp and lukewarm, which makes it a favourable ground for bacteria. Some kit manufacturers recommend every six months, which is the safer option if the appliance sees little use.
Is softened water safe to drink?
Softened water remains drinkable, but its sodium content rises, which makes it unsuitable for low-salt diets and for preparing baby bottles. The recommended setup is to keep one unsoftened supply at the kitchen tap.
