Electric bike lifespan: how long does it last?

Short answer

Electric bike: 8 to 15 years (battery: 3 to 5 years) on average, so around 10 years in normal household use. Regular maintenance routinely pushes past the top of that range.

A well-maintained electric bike comfortably passes ten years. Its battery, however, is measured in charge cycles rather than years: 500 to 1000 depending on the technology, meaning 3 to 5 years of regular use before the range becomes a nuisance.

That split changes everything: the bike itself hardly ever needs replacing, it is the battery that reaches end of life. A replacement, or even a refurbishment, costs a fraction of a new bike and resets the clock.

Thinking of buying one?

  • Expect 8 to 15 years (battery: 3 to 5 years) of use for a well-maintained model.
  • 5 maintenance tasks decide how long it lasts.

Signs it is reaching the end

  • Range has clearly dropped on a route you know well
  • The battery heats up while charging, or drains on its own when parked
  • Assistance cuts out intermittently on hills
  • The chain skips or the derailleur no longer shifts cleanly
  • Brakes bite less and the lever comes closer to the bar

The maintenance that extends its life

  • Check tyre pressure, the number one cause of lost range

    How often: every 2 weeks

  • Clean and lubricate the chain, especially after rain

    How often: every month

  • Check brake pad wear and brake adjustment

    How often: every 3 months

  • Check that the stem, seatpost and wheel axles are properly tightened

    How often: every 3 months

  • Have a full service at a bike shop (drivetrain, bearings, motor firmware)

    How often: once a year

Repair or replace?

The bike itself can always be repaired: drivetrain, brakes, bearings and even the motor are standard spare parts. The real question is the battery. Expect 400 to 800 € for a new original battery, less for a refurbishment, against several thousand for a new bike: the maths almost always favours the battery. Before writing it off, check its actual capacity, often readable in the manufacturer's app.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an electric bike battery last?

Between 500 and 1000 charge cycles depending on the technology, meaning 3 to 5 years of regular use. At 500 cycles a battery typically keeps 80 to 85 % of its original range: still usable, simply less enduring.

How do I look after an electric bike battery?

Avoid charging or storing it in direct sun or in the cold, unplug the charger once charging is done rather than leaving it on overnight, and for winter storage keep it between 30 and 60 % charge in a temperate room, topping it up every four to six months.
