Bread maker lifespan: how long does it last?
Bread maker: 5 to 8 years on average, so around 6 years in normal household use. Regular maintenance routinely pushes past the top of that range.
A bread maker generally lasts 5 to 8 years. No public reliability study covers this machine specifically: this range reflects the order of magnitude observed on motor-driven small kitchen appliances, not a measured statistic.
What wears out, in order: the non-stick coating of the pan, the drive shaft of the paddle, then the motor itself. The first two can be replaced; the third usually marks the end.
Thinking of buying one?
- Expect 5 to 8 years of use for a well-maintained model.
- 4 maintenance tasks decide how long it lasts.

Record my applianceSigns it is reaching the end
- Dough sticks to the bottom although the recipe has not changed (worn coating)
- The paddle jams in the loaf or no longer turns freely on its shaft
- The motor struggles or gets noisy during kneading
- Bread rises poorly or bakes unevenly (tired heating element)
- Play appears under the pan, or an oil mark under the machine
The maintenance that extends its life
Wash the pan and paddle by hand, without abrasive sponges or the dishwasher
How often: after every loaf
Remove the paddle and check that it turns freely on its shaft
How often: every 3 months
Clean the heating element, the window and the underside of the lid (flour and baked-on splashes)
How often: every 6 months
Vacuum the air vents and the pan housing
How often: every 6 months
Repair or replace?
A new pan or spare paddle costs a few tens of euros and is well worth it on a machine that still kneads properly: this is the most common wear, and the easiest to fix. A motor or mainboard failure, however, almost always costs more than an entry-level new machine. Check that a pan is still available for your model before buying: it is what will decide how long your machine really lasts.
Frequently asked questions
Can the bread pan go in the dishwasher?
No, unless the manufacturer explicitly says so. The dishwasher attacks the non-stick coating and can push water into the drive shaft bearing, which is not watertight. Hand washing, without submerging the pan, is the right method.
The paddle gets stuck in the loaf every time, what can I do?
Remove the paddle after the final kneading stage, before the last rise: most machines leave a window for this. Also check that the shaft turns freely and grease it as the manual says, since a seized shaft makes the problem worse.
