A built-in electric oven lasts 10 to 15 years on average. It is a robust appliance: few moving parts means little mechanical wear.
The most common failures involve the heating element, the thermostat and the door seal. All three are inexpensive and easy to replace, which makes repair almost always worthwhile.
Signs it is reaching the end
- Cooking becomes uneven or takes much longer
- The real temperature no longer matches the display
- The door no longer closes tightly and heat escapes
- The heating element shows bright spots or is deformed
- The light or the display stops working

Repair or replace?
Repair is nearly always the right call on an oven: an element or a thermostat rarely costs more than 150 € fitted, against 400 to 900 € for a new built-in oven. Replacement is only really justified by a major electronic failure on an appliance over 12 years old.
