A freezer that ices up unusually fast uses more electricity, loses capacity and wears its compressor. Frost forms from moisture getting in, so the cause is almost always air ingress.

Worn or dirty door seal

Why does my freezer ice up so much?
Frost forms from moisture in the air getting into the appliance. The main causes are a worn door seal, frequent or lengthy openings, and food that is badly wrapped or still warm.
Does frost increase electricity use?
Yes, noticeably. A few millimetres of frost insulate the walls and force the compressor to work harder. Defrost as soon as the layer reaches 3 to 5 mm: that is money saved and wear avoided.
Your freezer may be nearing the end of its life: a freezer lasts 10 to 16 years. Beyond that, an expensive repair is harder to justify.
